Reasons for Writing (1 John 2:12-14New International Version (NIV))

12 I am writing to you, dear children,
    because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
    because you have overcome the evil one.
14 I write to you, dear children,
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
    and the word of God lives in you,
    and you have overcome the evil one.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.( Proverbs 1:7)

And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
    and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”( Hebrews 12:5-6New International Version (NIV))

False Prophets Condemned(Ezekiel 13:1-4New International Version (NIV))

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to the foolish[ prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing! Your prophets, Israel, are like jackals among ruins.

Lying Prophets(Jeremiah 23:9-11New International Version (NIV))

Concerning the prophets:
My heart is broken within me;
    all my bones tremble.
I am like a drunken man,
    like a strong man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and his holy words.
10 The land is full of adulterers;
    because of the curse[a] the land lies parched
    and the pastures in the wilderness are withered.
The prophets follow an evil course
    and use their power unjustly.
11 “Both prophet and priest are godless;
    even in my temple I find their wickedness,”
declares the Lord.
